Kilcawley Construction are delighted to be partnering with SOLAS and Atlantic Technological University (ATU Sligo and Galway Campus) to provide a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to become a future engineer through a recognised apprenticeship programme, lasting a duration of 3 years.

We are currently seeking first year individuals for an Apprentice Civil Engineer level 6 and level 7, full-time positions.

You will develop your skills along with your academic learning to achieve the professional accreditation of a “Higher Certificate in Civil Engineering Level 6” after 2 years, with the opportunity to advance to “Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering Level 7” after 1 further year of work and study.

During this apprenticeship with Kilcawley Construction, you will attend structured training provided by ATU, as and when required. This will be a mixture of online and face-to-face workshops.

This role will enable the successful candidate to gain valuable hands-on work experience for four days per week with a qualified mentor in Kilcawley Construction, as well as attending online college lectures one day per week (usually Friday’s). You will also attend the ATU Sligo campus one day per month for lab workshops.

You will have the opportunity to work with a team of highly skilled engineers, across various nationally recognised projects.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Be at Least 18 Years of Age
  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent with a Pass Grade in Math’s at Level 5
  • Strong literacy, verbal, and numeracy skills.
  • Good IT/ computer skills
  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles and technical drawings
  • Positive proactive attitude, a willingness to learn and take their own initiative.
  • A Passion for Civil Engineering and Construction Related Activities.
  • A Team Player with an enthusiasm for their work

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

You will report directly to a Site Manager/Project Manager in assisting overseeing a full site team and associated subcontractors, and assisting in the safe, timely execution of the works in accordance with the project budgetary, programme and quality requirements.

Location- During College Term- Site Based 4 Days Per Week and online lectures on the 5th day. Also 1 Day per month is required at ATU Campus Sligo for Lab Workshops.

Outside College Term- Site or Office Based 5 Days Per Week.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • Day-to-day management of the site, including supervising and monitoring the site labour force and the work of subcontractors

 

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that the works are delivered in the safest manner possible, with the support of the Site Manager, EHS Advisor and Contracts Manager, in accordance with all legislative requirements
  • Ensure contractors on site execute works as per their approved method statement & risk assessment
  • Assisting the Site Manager or Site Foreman in giving daily site briefings to the workforce prior to starting work. This is vital to ensure interface risks between subcontractors are safely managed
  • Ensure the highest standards of housekeeping are maintained
  • Reporting of all safety incidents and/or accidents to the Safety Advisor & Company Directors in strict accordance with company protocols
  • Prepare method statements and risk assessments for construction activities as required
  • Help the company achieve our goal of Zero Harm on all our worksites to all our workers and third parties we interface with

 

Technical/Quality

  • Carrying out setting out and surveying activities for various building trades using robotic total station and dumpy level
  • Ensuring that the project is delivered snag free to the satisfaction of the Client
  • Coordinate and liaise with Contracts Manager, Site Engineers and Services Coordinator to ensure that all subcontractors and site personnel have timely and accurate information
  • Assist in resolving any unexpected technical difficulties and other problems that may arise from revised details issued or from situations as they arise on site
  • Assisting the Site Manager with college/university won technical knowledge for subcontractors, crafts people and operatives
  • Assist with site team to check & ensuring that all materials used, and work performed are as per specification and drawing requirements
  • Ensuring that all subcontractors execute their works as per their approved Inspection and Testing Plans and sign off inspection records as required
  • Managing and maintaining the RFI register on site
  • Managing and maintaining the submittals register on site
  • Assist in good record keeping on site progress photos, diary and maintaining of quality system.

 

Management

  • Act as a point of contact on site for day-to-day Client and designer liaison
  • Assist in Liaising with any consultants, subcontractors, supervisors, planners, quantity surveyors and the general workforce involved in the project to ensure timely successful completion
  • Assist in Management of requisition process for all materials and plant on site
  • Getting familiar with the contract documents supplied by the Client/architect
  • Assist to Monitor progress against the Contract Programme and escalate any delays or risk of delay to the Site Manager to mitigate
  • Assist in the production and revision of the contract and sub-programmes with the Contracts Manager & Planner
  • Ensure plant, labour and materials records are issued to Head Office on a weekly basis
  • Ensure company owned plant and equipment is maintained in good working order
  • Act in a courteous and professional manner at all times while protecting the position of the business.
